FAQ

Questions people ask first

Is a WellyChef bowl really complete and balanced?

A bowl built in the Bowl Builder with VMsure and fish oil is checked against every nutrient in the AAFCO Adult Maintenance profile, plus the NRC recommendation for EPA + DHA where AAFCO has none. The report card shows each nutrient against its minimum, and the three starter recipes meet all 28 targets. The values are calculated from USDA and formula data rather than laboratory analysis of your batch, which is why we call them planning tools and ask you to involve your vet.

Why do I need VMsure if I'm using fresh, whole foods?

Meat, rice and vegetables leave calcium, iodine, zinc, copper, vitamin D, vitamin E and several B vitamins short, however good the ingredients. Without a supplement a home recipe typically misses 10 to 14 targets. VMsure fills exactly those gaps. The Recipe Checker shows you the before and after for your own recipe.

How much VMsure does my dog need?

Usually 10–20 g per 1,000 kcal, so about 11–21 g a day for a 45 lb dog. The exact dose depends on the foods you use; the Bowl Builder sets it for your recipe. Weigh it on a kitchen scale and stir it in after the food has cooled.

What's the difference between Easy Simmer, Oven Bake and building my own?

Easy Simmer and Oven Bake are base mixes with the vegetables, oils, omega-3 sources and VMsure already in the bag; you add meat and water and cook. Building your own means choosing every food yourself and adding VMsure and fish oil; the builder works out the grams. Base mixes are quicker; building your own gives you full control over ingredients and cost.

Can I use it for my puppy?

No. The adult tools and VMsure dosing are built to the AAFCO Adult Maintenance profile. Puppies under 12 months (18 months for large and giant breeds), and pregnant or nursing dogs, need a growth diet with different calcium, protein and fat. Ask your vet, and see the puppy base mix on wellytails.ca.

Do I still need fish oil?

Yes. VMsure covers vitamins and minerals, and plant oils cover omega-6, but dogs also need long-chain omega-3 (EPA and DHA) from a marine source. Every WellyChef bowl adds a fish oil standardized to 18% EPA and 12% DHA, about 1 g per 1,000 kcal, at serving time. If your dog is allergic to fish, ask your vet about an algae-based EPA + DHA oil.

Which oil should I use for omega-6?

A linoleic-type oil: organic sunflower oil at about 65% linoleic acid, or high-linoleic safflower oil at about 75%. Check the label: most retail safflower and much sunflower oil is the high-oleic type, which is low in linoleic acid. Olive oil is fine for flavour but is not an omega-6 source.

How do I switch my dog over?

Over 10 days: 25% new bowl for three days, then 50%, then 75%, then all. If stool loosens, hold the step two more days. The builder gives the grams per meal for both foods. The switching guide.

What does it cost compared with my current food?

The builder's shopping list prices your recipe with your own grocery prices and shows cost per day and per month. Type the numbers from your current food's label into the compare card and it sits alongside, with the share of calories from protein, fat and carbohydrate for both.

Where is it made, and where do you ship?

VMsure and the base mixes are made in the USA. Orders ship from wellytails.com for the US and from wellytails.ca for Canada; use the region switch at the top of the page and every Buy button goes to the right store. International shipping from wellytails.com is being set up; if checkout doesn't offer your country yet, email info@wellytails.com.

Can I show this to my vet?

Please do. The Bowl Builder's recipe page has a one-page summary with the dog, the recipe, every nutrient against its standard and the data sources. The page written for vets explains the method.
