What to do When your Dog Doesn’t Want to Eat

It doesn’t matter if you’ve just gotten your dog, or you’ve had them for years, if there is one thing you can be certain of it’s that your dog loves to eat and will eat whenever possible. That’s why in those rare instances where your dog won’t eat it can be incredibly worrisome. But we want to put those worries to rest by not only explaining why your dog might not be eating, but also what solutions you can implement to help them regain their impressive, and often hilarious appetite.

There are several different reasons why your dog might not be eating. One of the first reasons is they might be sick. While that might seem scary at first, it is also a great way for your beloved dog to let you know that something is wrong. That doesn’t mean that whatever they’re enduring is cause for serious alarm, but if their loss of appetite persists, a visit to the vet will not only put yourself at ease, but your dog, too, as they can tell you what is wrong and recommend a proper diet until the issue is resolved.

Instead of an illness, your dog could also be suffering from a dental issue, and the resulting pain is making them less inclined to eat. If that is the case, it looks like a trip to the doggy dentist might be in the cards!

Another reason for your dog’s loss of appetite might have to do with a recent vaccination, as there can sometimes be side effects. But don't worry because those side effects are typically very mild, and don’t last very long.

If you’ve recently moved with your dog or have taken them on a vacation, they might have a temporary loss of appetite. That can be a result of motion sickness from the trip itself, or the discomfort from being in a new place. Again, there is no need to really worry, as those issues will pass relatively quickly.

Finally, if you’re sure that your dog isn’t sick, has dental issues, had a recent vaccination, or endured a recent move or trip, then your dog might simply be a picky eater. That’s right, it’s not just people who can be relentlessly picky when it comes to their food. Unfortunately, if that is the case, there is nothing else you can do but accommodate your dog’s “particular” tastes. It’s not all doom and gloom though, as there are plenty of delicious options that few dogs, even the pickiest, can refuse, such as WellyChef Homemade Dog Food Done Right Base Mix. However, never assume that your dog is picky until you’ve ensured their issues aren’t medically related.

So there you have it, dog owners, there are plenty of reasons that your dog might not be eating, and just as many solutions. So just go through the possibilities, take the necessary steps, and your dog will be back to eating whatever they can get a hold of in no time.
